When Should You Ask a Doctor Before Red Light Therapy?

Ask for individualized guidance before using a red light therapy bed if you take photosensitizing medication, have a known photosensitivity disorder, have an active or suspicious skin lesion, are pregnant, recently had surgery, or are managing a condition for which light exposure could affect treatment. People with significant eye disease or who have recently had an eye procedure should also obtain specific advice before exposing the face or eyes.

Extra caution is appropriate when the intended treatment area has a wound, infection, unexplained swelling, severe inflammation, or implanted equipment. A device may be noninvasive while still being inappropriate for a particular person or body area. Do not use a red light therapy bed to delay diagnosis of a new symptom or to replace prescribed treatment.

If a medical professional has given you a treatment plan, bring the bed’s model, wavelengths, irradiance information, and intended session schedule to the discussion. Specific technical information is more useful than simply saying that the device is “LED” or “infrared.”
