What is Photobiomodulation?

Photobiomodulation (PBM)— aka red light therapy or low-level laser therapy— is a treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to help the body heal.

Photobiomodulation therapy has beneficial therapeutic outcomes for the promotion of wound healing, whakahounga kiko, and alleviation of pain. Photobiomodulation is used by healthy people as well for improving cognition, tiaki kiri, recovery after competition or intense training, and preconditioning.

Photobiomodulation has many names: LLLT, Laser Biostimulation, Laser Phototherapy, Low-Power Laser Irradiation, Low-Power Laser Therapy, Whakamarama Whero Whero, a LED Light Therapy. Different names were used in various medical studies over the years which confused the subject of light healing. The term “Photobiomodulation” was adopted to negotiate this confusion and in 2015 it was added to the National Library of Medicine MeSH database.

How Does PBM Bed Therapy Work?

PBM Bed therapy works at the cellular level. Photons of therapeutic red and near-infrared light are absorbed by the mitochondria in your cells, producing 2 major effects:

  • More ATP energy: PBM Bed therapy increases adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy produced during cellular respiration that powers your cells (and indeed, all life on earth). More ATP means more energy and healthier function.
  • Enhanced cell signaling: Specific light wavelengths help create a better oxidative environment in your cells. This results in the activation of numerous intracellular signaling pathways, increased protein synthesis, and enhanced cell cycle progression.
